Why are alternative energy sources, to our current reliance of “fossil fuels”, so important? If we as a society are to solve the problem of putting extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere then we need to find another way to power our cars, heat and produce electricity for our homes and business, and produce much of our food. Our society relies so heavily on the combustion of fossil fuels that there probably isn’t one magic bullet – but a combination of approaches that will need to be employed.

One of the most promising sources of clean energy is solar energy from the sun. Sunlight has been used by humans since ancient times for various uses. Solar power comes in two main categories: active or passive. Passive solar is the directing of solar energy in strategic ways to allow for extra heating or cooling of spaces in the home. Active solar energy uses solar panels which convert the insolation into electricity via the phototelectric effect. The uses for active solar include (but are not limited to): heating of homes or businesses, heating of water, cooking, and can even be used for back-up, as a generator would be used for. Although the initial costs can be expensive, the homeowner can look into “solar panel leasing”, which has grown in popularity in some regions. Another source of energy with potential in some locations of the world is wind power. The conversion of wind energy is accomplished using wind turbines for electricity, windmills for mechanical power, windpumps for pumping water, and one of the more ancient uses, sails for boats. One of the main considerations are obstructions to the wind, so as to not have many power interruptions. Hydropower is yet another source of alternative energy. This water power is due to the force of moving water, which can be used to provide energy for human consumption. In the past (especially before the development of electricity) hydropower was used to power sawmills, cranes, lifts, and various machines and irrigation. Finally, geothermal energy is provided by exploiting the natural warmth of the earth below the surface. If you go far enough underground the temperature averages around 55 F year-round. This can provide electricity that can be utilized to provide power to energy producing grids and to warm residential buildings.

Alternative energy is abundant and clean. As research continues and methods of harnessing this energy becomes more cost-effect, it gives hope to someday leaving fossil fuels behind, which is a big step toward addressing the extra greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere. All the forms of alternative energy listed deserve consideration if looking for ways to wean yourself from the traditional power grid.

Those who have chosen the path of homeschooling have many choices and decisions ahead of them. One of the methods for consideration is that of unschooling. Before going into the pros and cons of this idea, what exactly is unschooling? Some brief definitions are:

· Unschooling is a belief system rather than a method.

· The radical idea of learning without “doing” school.

· The only true “free” education.

Unschooling parents believe that all people have a desire to learn and children should be encouraged to follow his/her interests in order to gain knowledge. They also think that kids are naturally curious (which they are) and will learn continually in the right environment. Kids should be free to choose exploration of what interests them in their own way on their own timeline. In this method, the adult is the facilitator and the child is the guide. Therefore the child sets the goals for each day.

The naysayers to this particular movement offer many cons to unschooling. Some of the more common arguments against unschooling are:

· Children are given entirely too much power.

· Children are taught the “center of the universe” mentality and don’t learn that disappointment or the word “no” are a part of the real world.

· Children, in their power of always choosing their path, don’t learn discipline, always get what they want, and do not gain coping skills necessary to deal with many parts of real life.

· There is little to no structure. Many believe that kids need routine as well as learning a respect for authority figures. There also seems to be little discipline enforced in this model.

· In the wrong environment, with less than dedicated “teachers,” children will not necessarily show the enthusiasm for learning or the initiative needed for success.

True believers in the homeschooling movement also put forth valid points in support of the method.

· First, and foremost, children learn independence, decision making and problem solving skills, and learn to take responsibility for their own learning and education.

· Students learn through a desire to learn rather than because they are being forced to learn.

· In a truly dedicated, nurturing environment, unschooled kids most likely love to learn and will develop into life-long learners.

· There are no deadlines, no time limits. If learning is honestly flowing, there is no reason to screech to a halt in order to move on to something else.

· Kids will learn things in their own time such as when they learned to walk or talk. They learned these things through observation and a natural desire to master a skill.

Whether you have chosen a side on this issue or still on the fence, this author thinks that one last thought must be taken into consideration. I acknowledge that with this method children will learn a great deal about things that they are truly interested in. My question is: What about those things that they have absolutely no interest in but are absolutely necessary in order to survive in this society? You decide.

The American Nurses Association defines nursing as the “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.”

That definition covers the technical scope of the nursing profession pretty well. But there is another important aspect of nursing-the human aspect. Words are probably not enough to describe nursing from a human angle. After all, what can you say about the people whose primary job is to provide care to the most vulnerable among us, without flinching? Can words do justice to the human impact of these professionals, who tend to not just the visible ailments and injuries, but also to the not-so-obvious psychological side effects of illness?

It’s clear that only an extraordinary person can enter a profession as noble and selfless as this. If you have what it takes to be a registered nurse (RN), then read on to find out how you can turn your dream of being a healthcare professional into reality.

How to Become a Registered Nurse (RN)

There are three pathways to become a registered nurse (RN). All the three are pretty straightforward and all of them should lead to entry-level staff nurse positions in a variety of healthcare environments, once completed.

Associate Degree in Nursing Education: An associate’s degree in nursing education (ADN) is typically a two-year academic program offered mainly by community and junior colleges. Some four-year private colleges may also offer an ADN program. The purpose of this program is to train students in the technical scope of nursing.

Although ADN programs also include a fair bit of nursing theory, the main focus of these degrees is to make graduates proficient in bed-side patient care. They can also provide an excellent foundation for further academic pursuits at a later point in time.

Bachelor Degree Completion in Nursing: The Bachelor of Science Completion in Nursing is a full-fledged four-year degree offered by four-year colleges and universities. The duration of a BSN is twice the length of an associate’s degree, because the program is much more comprehensive and in-depth in its scope.

Although the coursework of a BSN degree may vary from one school to another, the first two years of this program are usually spent on general science education through courses in biology, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, psychology, etc. The final two years of a typical BSN curriculum include nursing-oriented courses as well as practicums.

In fact, the practicum is an important component of all accredited nursing programs, as it provides students valuable real-life exposure in clinical practice under the supervision of doctors or senior nurses.

Nursing Diploma: It used to be a popular route to becoming a registered nurse, but nursing diplomas are fast losing their appeal. In fact, only 17.5% of RNs held a nursing diploma in 2004.1Nursing diploma programs are usually administered by hospitals and take about three years to complete.

The reason for their diminishing popularity can only be guessed. Maybe academic institutions provide a more conducive learning environment than hospitals for nursing students, or maybe beginning students think a nursing degree is a better credential than a diploma.

Certification and Advancement

Whichever path one chooses for becoming a registered nurse, it doesn’t hold any value unless they pass the requisite licensure exam, called the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Only after they pass the exam can nursing students obtain a license to practice as a registered nurse.

Once they have gained some experience as RNs, a nursing professional can choose from a number of advancement opportunities.

A Master’s of Science in Nursing is apt for those looking to become advanced practice nurses (APNs); a master’s degree in healthcare administration can be explored by RNs keen to move into management or leadership roles; while a master’s degree in nursing education can help pave the way for RNs to don the role of educators and train nursing students.

So, a couple of days ago, I accompanied my parents to a car dealership to shop around for a new car they were in the market for when we were approached by one of their salesmen. Of course, he saw that we were speaking Spanish amongst each other, so he approached us speaking Spanish himself.

We started talking, comparing cars and prices, the routine humdrum of the car-buying experience. So when my parents more or less settled on the car of their choice, we proceeded to then fill out all the necessary paperwork and go over all of the necessary terms and conditions.

While we were waiting for some things to check out, we found ourselves engaging in small talk, when for some reason we got around to talking about what I was doing for a living. I told him I was in the process of becoming a Spanish teacher because it was something that I was deeply passionate about.

He then told me something that has stuck to me since then, and even came to reinforce my personal belief in languages. He told me that I had NO IDEA how great it was for me to want to engage in a career where languages are involved.

I kind of knew where he was coming from when he said that, but I still asked him to explain what he meant. He told me that to make a career in anything where languages are involved served to make me a much higher ‘in-demand’ commodity.

He then proceeded to tell me a bit about himself, that he was born in Colombia to English and French parents. He had moved to the US some 30+ years ago, and began to carve out a life here. Of course, he leaned toward a career in automotive sales. But, in the years since he had begun, he had achieved unique success. And he frankly told me it was strictly because of his ability to speak more than one language.

When he was initially hired, his main attribute was speaking Spanish, which the brass saw as a plus, since it would allow them to attract a completely new client base. Being the only Spanish speaker at the dealership, he knew that the ENTIRE client base was his, essentially creating a stable sense of job security. Not to mention the fact that he was still able to cater to the English-speaking clients, and he knew his career was set.

Fast forward to today, he told me not much had changed in the 20+ years since he began. He still operates as the ONLY Spanish-speaking salesman where he currently works, catering to that particular client base, as well as still catering to the English-speaking clients, but he now has parlayed his bilingual talents over the years into allowing him to open up not one, but two of his OWN car dealerships. He tells me that he also gets to enjoy such luxuries life has to offer; vacations, properties, (of course, cars), all because he made a career in something where he was able to exploit his bilingual abilities.

Now something like this, someone with a success story in bilingualism, was something I had always known to be more than entirely possible. But, every now and again, when you come across these things firsthand, it still has the power to leave you awestruck. And I was surely awestruck by this man.
